Hi, I need DR a solution for my environment, currently the situation is that
we have a 400GB database sitting on SQL 2005 Std, it's is our main CRM
database with around 300 users connected at anyone time, I have the
production system sitting in one location connected via a 100MB shared WAN to
the DR Environment, the production system is a standalone HP Blade, 16GB mem
etc etc, the DR is a VM on VMWARE with similar spec, little less mem.

Currently we've setup TLS similar to this setup:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/omar/archive/2006/09/15/How-to-setup-SQL-Serve...005-Tra

But it's not reliable and takes days to get back up and running when it
screws up.

Essentially we want an almost real-time backup DB at DR that, if needed, we
could bring online and start using at the DR site or over the WAN, the TLS
works when it works but it's not reliable.

Can someone tell me what the best solution/solutions would suit us so we can
investigate and implement, or inform me that what we have is best and to
continue?

Thanks in advance, let me know if you need more info.

Mike

Database mirroring has shorter latencies than log shipping and is easy to
administer. However, you won't be able to use High Performance mode unless
you upgrade to Enterprise Edition, so there will be a hit on the production
box of having synchronous work going on.
I'm also interested in what is going wrong with your log-shipping setup.
Finally can you tell us why the standard setup can't be used as you are on a
WAN and not a workgroup - although I doubt this is related to your log
shipping issues - just curious.
Cheers,

I thought this might be the best solution given the size of my DB, this isn't
really my field, do you have a link to an easy to setup 'Standard Setup'?

I'll have a read up about the mirroring but if it's going to have a
performace hit I doubt it's were we want to go and with 4 processors
enterprise is going to cost upwards of $80k.

Thanks Paul

To be honest I don't know of a definitive article. Books online is pretty
good though, albeit without screenshots. I can however recommend this book
which I used a lot:
