Post subject: 2-node cluster won't stop sqlservr.exe during user-initiated
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>clustering (more info?)

I have the following cluster config:

2x HP DL585 servers (identical) - 4x Opteron 852 processors, 8GB RAM,
Win2003Enterprise, SQL 2000 Enterprise
1x HP MSA 500 SCSI shared-storage
1x HP SCSI adapter per server (included with MSA500, not sure of the model #)

The servers are in an active/passive configuration. Either one works fine
during normal operation. But when we do a "move group" for the SQL Server
group from either node to the other, the move process stalls waiting for
sqlservr.exe to stop.

These are pretty fast machines, but we've waited 20 minutes, with almost no
CPU activity, before killing sqlservr.exe in task manager. At that point the
cluster resources complete their move to the passive node and everything
starts up just fine. We don't experience any database corruption, though
we've de-activated all the db client applications before doing this, so the
db server load is very near zero.

My suspicion is that this is related to roaming profiles (required for
encrypting file system with Win2003 clusters), which are located on the same
machine in a cluster share, in the SQL Server cluster group, with SQL Server
dependant on the share.

Any thoughts?

I should add that moving the cluster resource group back and forth is quick
and painless - only a few seconds to move from one node to the other.

Any clues in the cluster host nodes' application event logs?

Geoff,

I started the cluster move at about 10:30 AM when this happened. From 10:00
to 11:30, there are nothing but informational messages in the System and
Application event logs. Of those, nothing references the cluster operation,
except to describe some cluster-group services starting on the
becoming-active node.

More versions:
Windows 2003 Enterprise including SP1
SQL Server 2000 including SP3a and SQL hotfix 840 (KB810185 - sets SQL
version to 8.00.0840).

Is the Cluster service account a domain account with licam admin group
menbership on both host nodes?

It's a domain account, with local admin membership on both nodes. I think
that's what you mean. "licam"?

Yes, that is what I meant. I shouldn't type when I am sleep deprived. My
brain doesn't work my fingers correctly.

You haven't changed the SQL Service account information any time recently,
have you? If you don't set the account using Enterprise Mangler, the
permissions can get messed up. Also, make sure there aren't any DNS, Hosts
file, or SQL aliases that mangle the local computer name. It might be a
service name resolution issue.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything else. Maybe Rodney or one
of the other Windows Cluster MVPs can chime in with an idea.

Geoff,

That probably has happened. These are new servers, and the deployment
process was fairly complex and involved a few different security
configurations before we settled on the final accounts.

Is there a good way to re-initialize the current run-as accounts for SQL
Server and SQL Server Agent? Do we have to switch to a dummy account,
stop/start cluster resources, switch back, stop/start cluster resources?

Almost. Go ahead and switch accounts, save, switch back, save again and
then stop-start the services. Also, the SQL service accounts MUST be
members of the local administrators group in a SQL cluster.
