Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>clustering (more info?)

Hey guys,

I have a client who would like to install a one node SQL 2005 cluster now
and add a node later when financially feasible. I haven't tried this in the
past and unfortunately don't have any hardware to test with.

Does SQL Server 2005 support the installation of a one node cluster? If so,
is the process of adding a node the same as adding a node to an existing
multi-node SQL cluster? Any gotchas with the install, service pack, etc.
when adding the second node?

Thanks,
Greg

Yep. All clusters start as a single node and you add nodes as required.

And just as a followup,SQL Server is moving to that logic as well. You will
install the bits on all nodes, then configure SQL to operate as a clustered
instance. This is still in the development stage and has not surfaced yet
in a CTP, but it is the intended direction of SQL Clustering.
