Post subject: cannot log into Reporting Services from SMSS
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>connect (more info?)

I have SQL Server 2005 with a full installation, and Reporting Services is
running according to the Configuration Manager. In SMSS, when I try to
connect to the Reporting Services server (my server is called ASUS2), it
responds:

Cannot connect to ASUS2...Client found response content type of 'text/html;
charset=utf 8', but expected 'text/xml'. The request failed with the error
message:
--
Reporting Services is unavailable.

I have no idea what this means. How do I fix it?

Hello Ed,

To understand the issue better, I'd like to know the following informaiton:

1. What's the result if you connect to http://servername/reportserver and
http://servername/report? If you encounter errors, please let me know the
exact error message.

2. Please collect the report services log under

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Reporting Services\LogFiles

You could send them to me and remove "online" from my displayed email
address.

3. Did you try to Reporting services configuration from startup menu->All
Programs->SQL Server 2005->Configuration tools?

Please check if the IIS is properly configured in the machine. Is there a
web.config in c:\inetpub\wwwroot? There shouldn't be one. If there is one,
please temporarily move the file to another folder and run RS configuration
tool to see if it helps.

If you have other related information, please feel free to let's know.
Thank you.

Best Regards,

Hi Peter,

When I try to log into the Report Server from IE per your #1, it returns
essentially "Internet Explorer cannot open this page."

I'm emailing you the last few logs. I noticed at one point in the logs it
says "Evaluation copy: 0 days left". I've installed the Developer version of
SQL Server 2005 with the latest service pack (SP1 I believe). In SMSS, when
I try to log into Analyis Services or any of the others (Integration
Services, etc.), it works--it's just Reporting Services I cannot log into.
I've installed SQL Server 2005 on my laptop, and it responds exactly the same
way (i.e. cannot log into Reporting Services but can log into other services).

I have pulled up the Reporting Services configuration, and everything
appears to be fine (I haven't selected encryption keys, but I don't see how
that should matter).

There is no web.config file in c:\inetpub\wwwroot.

I Googled the error message and found a number of other people have had this
issue, but found no-one that had a suggested fix to it. My guess is that it
has something to do with the "Evaluation Copy" in the log.

Ed

Incidentally, just to clarify, Reporting Services works fine from VS 2005. I
can design and preview reports just fine. The problem is that I cannot log
into Reporting Services from SMSS. I can log into other services (e.g.
Analysis Services, Integration Services, etc.) from SMSS, just not Reporting
Services.

Hello Ed,

It's normal that "Evaluation copy: 0 days left" appears since 0 days means
unlimited days. The following is copied from my test machine and it's a
Enterprise edition.

ReportingServicesService!resourceutilities!9!11/01/07-05:36:25:: i INFO:

I think the issue is caused by that RS cannot connect to report server
database server as shown in the following exception:

In Reporting services configuration utitlity, please check credential you
use in "database setup" entry. Please make sure the report server
database/server name is configured properly. Also, please make sure the
credential you use has the proper permission on the SQL instance/database.
Please click Connect to verify that the instance of SQL Server 2005 is
available.

If you encounter problem, you may want to temporarily grant "sysadmin"
server role to the credential you use. If you connect to the server by
using the credential by using SQL Server management studio, can you log on
properly? Can you see Reportserver database and can you access the database
properly?

Please let's know if you have any update. Thank you.

In Reporting Services Configuration Manager, on the left, all items are
checked green except for SharePoint Integration and Encryption Keys which are
blue, and Email Settings and Execution Account are yellow. I can Connect
just fine. Under Server Stats, it says it is Initialized and Running. Under
Database Setup, the Database Name is ReportServer, Server Mode is Native,
Credentials Type is Service Credentials. When I change Credentials Type to
something else, it doesn't work (it gives some kind of error), but when I
change it back to Service Credentials, at the bottom is says Number of
Errors: 0 and all of the tasks below get a green check mark. However, I
still cannot log into Reporting Services through SMSS.

I can log into SMSS Database Engine, Analysis Services, etc. using Windows
Authentication with no problem.

Also, I'm not sure how to grant "sysadmin" server role to the credential I
use, since I am using Windows Authentication. How do I do this?

Okay, try this: https://betav61/reports$ss2k5/Pages/Folder.aspx
This URL includes the named instance "ss2k5".
Next, get into your Users and create a user "SQLe". Don't worry about
rights. Set the password as needed but make sure it does not expire (for
now).
Next, open the config manager and choose the Execution Account and choose
SQLe as the execution account. When you do so the appropriate rights are
automatically set (or should be).

I can't figure out what you're suggesting, and/or it doesn't work.
When I navigate to https://betav61/reports$ss2k5/Pages/Folder.aspx, it says
"Internet Explorer cannot display this page."
To create a new user, I'm not exactly sure how, but this is what I tried.
In SMSS, under Databases->ReportServer->Security->Users, I right-click New
User. It asks for a User name (I used SQLe) and Login name. It doesn't ask
for a password. I tried all different Login names, but when I add the SQLe
as an Execution Account, it responds "The account name is not valid. Specify
an account in the form domain\alias." I'm not very familiar with
manipulating SQL Server in this way, so please be more detailed in what to
do.

Thanks, Ed

Hello Ed,

You could try the following steps to grant a login in SQL Server with
sysadmin role:

In SQL Management studio, select Server name->Security->Logins, and right
click the login->Properties->Server roles

Check "sysadmin" role.

Please add a domain user as a new login and grant it sysadmin role.

I'd like to know in database setup if you change the type to Windows
credential, and use the domain user you configure in above step, what's the
exact error message you encounter?

Also, you may want to temporiarily grant "Nt authority/network service"
account with sysadmin role, can you see any difference if you access
http://servername/reportserver?

Please confirm you installed default instance of RS, if it's a named
instance, you need to connect to

http://servername/reportserver$instancename as mentioned by william.

Please let's know if you have any update, please feel free to let's know.
Thank you.

When you say in SMSS select Server name...Server roles, there are seven
logins listed. One of them is sa, which is what I assume you were talking
about. "sysadmin" role was already checked for that login.

I don't know how to "add a domain user". I've tried to add a new login, but
was unsuccessful mostly because I'm not familiar with the process.

In Reporting Services Configuration Manager, when I change Credentials Type
to Windows Credentials, I leave the Account Name and Password blank. It
responds:

Number of errors: 0
* There was a failure applying your change.
You need to specify the database name and the server name to run the
selected task(s).

I've left the server name as before (ASUS2), and the database name is
ReportServer.

I installed the ReportServer as part of a full installation of SQL Server
2005--I'm sure I did not ask for a named instance --I generally used the
defaults during installation.

Hello Ed,

You could try the following steps to add a domain user to sql logins.

1. In SQL Management studio, select Server name->Security->Logins

2. Right click the logins->New login

3. Type "domainname\username"(without quotes) in Login name box. For
example, you domain name is test and the user name is user1, you should
type "test\user1"(without quotes)

4. Click "server roles" on left panel, and check "sysadmin" role

5. Click OK to add.

After that, please use the login in Report Manager configuration utility:

1. On Database setup panel, select "Windows credential"

2. In Account name, type "domainname\username" (without quotes), and in
password box type the password you use for this account.

3. Check Servername and database to make sure they are correct. You could
click "connect" to test.

4. Click Apply to see the result. Please let me know the error message if
you encounter any.

Please add the domain user as local admin temporarily by following steps:

1. Right click "My Computer"->Manage->Local users and groups

2. Select Groups, and double click "Administrators" group.

3. Click "Add", and type "domainname\username" (without quotes), and click
OK.

Please try to connect http://servername/reportserver to see the result. If
you still see the same error message, please check the report server log to
see if it has the same exception we noticed in previous repot server log.
Thank you for your time.
