Post subject: How can I install SQL Server Managment Studio (2005)?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>setup (more info?)

Hi;

How can I install Sql Server 2005 so that I get SQL Server Management
Studio? I have tried installing the standard edition 3 times and I
don't even get the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell

What do I need to do to get this in the install?

thanks - dave

ps - I hate the 2005 installer - it never installs SQL Server as we
want - unlike the Sql Server 2000 which is always a piece of cake. We
stayed with Sql Server 2000 as our development environment up till now
because of the installer.

As an alternative to Charles' suggestion, you can simply run
"\Tools\Setup\SqlRun_Tools.msi" to install Management Tools.

Do not skip to click on the icon near to Client Components and click on the
"Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive".

You can also installed Client Tools using Command Prompt:
Start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\servers\setup.exe /qb
INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>
ADDLOCAL=Client_Components,Connectivity,SQL_Tools90,SQL_WarehouseDevWorkbench,SQLXML,Tools_Legacy,SQL_Documentation,SQL_BooksOnline

For more information about installing SQL Server from Command Prompt, see
this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259(SQL.90).aspx

Note:
SQL Server 2005' s installation interface is much much more improved and
stable than SQL Server 2000' s.

Hi David,
From your description, I understand that you could not install SQL Server Management Studio on your computer.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.

Did you choose "Management Toos" in the Advanced option during your setup process?

Anyway I recommend that you try adding the component with the following steps:
1. Click Start->Run..., input appwiz.cpl and click OK;
2. Locate Microsoft SQL Server 2005, click Change, check "Workstation Components" and click Next;
3. Follow the setup wizard until "Change or Remove Instance" window appear, then click the button "Change Installed Components", click Client components and click "Entire feature will be
installed on local hard drive"; and then follow the process to finish the setup.

If this issue persists, I recommend that you send me (changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com) the setup logs for further research. They are located in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG.

If there is anything unclear, please feel free to let me know. Look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Charles Wang

I tried your second suggestion (could not find the file
SqlRun_Tools.msi on my hard drive or install CD) - and it told me that
I could not run the installer because I had a newer version installed.
I assume this is because I ran the service pack after installing.

thanks - dave

Yes, it's because of the SP installation. Then you'll need to use SKUUPGRADE
parameter and install this tool from Command Prompt.

For instance:
Start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\servers\setup.exe /qb
INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName> ADDLOCAL=Client_Components,SQL_Tools90
SKUUPGRADE=1

Note:
You'll need to reapply SQL Server 2005 SPs and CUs after running this
command. Also "SqlRun_Tools.msi" must be there, because it's a standard
setup file. However, even if you find it you can't use it to install
Management Tools because of the SP. You'd need to use this way anyway.

Try running the following command from the command line or Run: SqlWb.exe

Hi David,
From the error log, I found that you had SQL Server Express instance and client tools installed and the version was SP2. In this
case, to add the original tool, you need to specify SKUUPGRADE=1 switch to upgrade the client tools of Express Edition to
Standard Edition. You can refer to Ekrem's suggestion of using command line. If you want to use GUI, you can first open a
command prompt and then navigate to the server setup directory and input the following command:
D:\setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1

After the upgrade finishes, please re-apply SP2 on your client tools. Hope this helps.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Charles Wang
