Simple fix.
Change the Client Network Utility to use Named Pipes instead of TCP/IP.
Or create a Named Pipes alias.

Otherwise, you'll need to use network monitor and Netdiag.exe to narrow
down the source of the problem.

I have a similar problem occasionally with an app that I run. Usually this
error occurs for me when I am attempting to connect to a SQL Server that was
turned off before I launched the app, but turned on after the app was
launched. Shutting down the app and restarting fixes it for me.

Thanks,
Michael C.

Hi Kris,
Its failing to authenticate the user over TCP/IP. In order to do this
we have to call an additinal API , SSPI. We also have to communicate with
the DC to make the connection succeed. With Named Pipes the client
impersonation is built-in. There's no additional overhead associated with
it.
