Hi,
I think i have found a bug when installing SQL Server 2005 in a cluster
environment that is member of a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain. The bug
comes in the screen where setup asks for groups in domain to services. It
doesn´t matter what group its informed, i always get a message telling that i
don´t have permissions to change the group membership, but this is not
correct cause i´m logged with a user that belongs to the domain admins group
and the group´s ACL is correct.
I searched the web looking for some requirements that states that a Windows
2003 Active Directory domain is needed in a SQL Server 2005 cluster
environment, but i haven't found anything.
After a deep analyzis using Network Monitor and Ldp.exe i found that the
error ocurrs when the setup program searches the Active Directory using as
base of the query the SID of the group parametrized at the screen, but this
kind of query is not supported in Windows 2000 (the query returns a Naming
Violation error in Ldp.exe), however the same query works in Windows 2003.
Based on this facts i believe that we have a bug when installing SQL Server
2005 in a cluster environment where the Active Directory is Windows 2000
based OR the documented requirements are not correct. If the Windows 2000
Active Directory is not supported by SQL Server 2005 cluster the message that
arrives in setup should be revised to be more consistent.
I don´t know if this is the right place to put this, but i believe that the
SQL Server 2005 team looks here and maybe they can fix this.
Thanks in advance!
George
