I've read here and elsewhere that older OLAP clients (such as Excel
2003) can connect to AS 2005, but without support for new features. I
can't seem to get anything to connect to my AS 2005 box. I'm running
the September CTP on both the server and the workstation I'm trying to
connect with. The odd thing is it will connect to the server and let
you pick a database but doesn't go any further than that.

I've installed the beta of ProClarity 6.1 so I can use that but I want
to use Reporting Services 2000 and can't get that to work. Also tried
Excel 2003 ... no dice their either.

Anybody else seen this and if so, how did you resolve it?

That's odd. I'm using Excell 2003 on a workstion with Sept CTP client
as well. The cube I'm trying to connec to only has 2 dimension so
memory shouldn't be an issue. In any case, it doesn't appear to get to
that point. It connects to the server and lets me choose a database
but fails right after that.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. I've installed SQL 2005 CTP of June (tried more CTP's as well!). In Excel 2003 I want to create a PivotTable using an external Data source. When trying to connect, the cubes are detected, but I cannot get any further.
The error in Excel is: initialization of the data source failed. Check the database server etc...
Also other client tools like Proclarity cannot connect to the Cubes

Can somebody tell me what the problem could be?

Ok, it works in Excel now. To solve it you should register msolap90.dll by running this command:
regsvr32 "c:\program files\common files\system\ole db\msolap90.dll"

Registering the DLL worked for me as well at least in terms of Excel.
I was told by ProClarity that 5.2 can't connect to AS 2005 and I don't
have it on this box since I upgraded to YellowStone (6.1) beta so I
could see my AS 2005 cubes. But it's nice to have Excel working at
least.

Anybody have a released version of ProClarity hiting 2005 cubes?

Also, regarding the comment above regarding the dll being registered
during AS install, the workstation I am on had September CTP installed
on it, including AS. But still had to register the DLL manually.
Maybe a CTP bug?

Get the following error connecting from Pivot Tables in Excel to AS 2005:

XML for Analysis parser: The LocaleIdentifier property is not overwritable
and cannot be assigned a new value.

Any ideas?
