Hi there,
if I am connected to a server in object explorer and I then
open a query window or open a file, is there any way that I can get
Management Studio to use the current connection as in the Object Explorer
instead of prompting me to log in again and connecting to the master
database instead of the one that I am working on?

Waldy,

If I highlight a database in Object Explorer and hit Ctrl-N I get a query
window connected to the highlighted database. If I just have the servername
or the Database node highlighted, I get a query window connected to my
default database. (Which may be master for you.)

If I do Help / About from Management Studio it reports my tool version as
9.00.3042. What do you get? Are you still running the original install of
the tools? or SP1? SP2? CU9? (And SP3 is coming Real Soon Now.) I
remember more connection prompts with the earliest versions of Management
Studio.

FWIW,
RLF

If you right-click the server/database in Object Explorer and select New
Query, you will have the right context in the new query window. If you use
Ctrl+N or open a file, then where it connects will depend on the focus
context in Object Explorer. If you have no context in Object Explorer then
it will prompt (though I think Russell is correct that this behavior has
improved over time and with newer updates to the tools).

Thanks Guys,
I am on version 9.00.3042. I think the difference is
when the highlight colour in the object explorer is blue or grey. It is
blue if the object explorer has focus and grey when another window has
focus. Although a database may be highlighted in the explorer, if that
window does not have focus, you get the prompt.

I thought that the behaviour seemed to be random, but I now understand what
is happening.
