I created a database on my deskto[p computer, and wanted to play with it on my
laptop, for I copied it there, but it told me it could not find it, because
the path on my desktop computer was not there.

Does anyone know what causes this, and how it can be prevented?

What kind of database? What "back end" implementation did it have?

What was the exact error message? Copy and paste of the text would be
best.
