FileMaker Unveils New FileMaker Go for iPhone and FileMaker Go for iPad

Available now on the App Store, FileMaker Go delivers live access to
hosted FileMaker Pro databases, and lets users copy desktop databases to
iPhone or iPad

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – July 20, 2010 – FileMaker, Inc. today announced
FileMaker Go for iPhone (http://www.filemaker.com/fm_go_iphone_pr) and
FileMaker Go for iPad,(http://www.filemaker.com/fm_go_ipad_pr) the
highly anticipated new Apps now available from the iTunes App Store
which let users work remotely with FileMaker Pro
(http://www.filemaker.com/products/filemaker-pro/?nav=products-pro)
databases on iPhone or iPad. With FileMaker Go – available as two
separate apps for iPhone or iPad – users can easily view, edit and
search for information in FileMaker databases on their iPhone or iPad.

Ideal for mobile teams, FileMaker Go provides access to databases
created with FileMaker Pro and hosted on FileMaker Server or FileMaker
Pro. FileMaker Go can access databases residing on a Mac or PC using a
local wireless network or over the Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G. All changes
are instantly updated in the hosted file.

FileMaker Go users can also copy databases between their desktop or
laptop computers and FileMaker Go via File Sharing in iTunes, perfect
for single user databases. Databases may also be downloaded by email,
popular file sharing sites, or the web.

“Imagine being able to check inventory levels, update the status of a
project or add a new customer contact and share it with your remote
sales team – just a few of the many workgroup tasks made easy with
FileMaker Go for iPhone or iPad,” said Ryan Rosenberg, vice president of
marketing and services for FileMaker, Inc. “We are genuinely excited
about the ways FileMaker Go caters to mobile users who need remote
interaction with their data.”

FileMaker Go makes it easy to add, modify, or delete data; find, sort
and navigate through records; open new windows; and switch between
layouts. Many popular FileMaker Pro features are supported on FileMaker
Go, including Tab controls, Quick Find, Web Viewers, External SQL Data
Sources, containers, portals and even most scripts.

The new Apps work in both portrait and landscape views, automatically
switching as necessary. FileMaker Go also allows users to search, modify
and sort records using touch gestures – simply pinch, swipe, rotate and
zoom to manage data. Existing FileMaker Pro layouts look amazing on the
large iPad display screen – no modification is necessary for most solutions.

Praise from independent FileMaker developers

“We expect immediate adoption of FileMaker Go by outside sales teams,
housing inspectors, warehouse inventory managers, and event planners
among others,” said Richard Carlton, president, Richard Carlton
Consulting, Inc. (http://www.rcconsulting.com/index.html)

“It’s stunning how well FileMaker Go on the iPad and iPhone ‘just
works!’ ” said Scott Love, Chief Operating Officer, Soliant Consulting
(http://www.soliantconsulting.com). “By extending beyond the Mac and PC
and onto the iPad and iPhone platforms, FileMaker continues to deliver
an unbeatable ROI for our clients.”

Availability, Pricing, and Compatibility
FileMaker Go is available now from the App Store. FileMaker Go for
iPhone and iPod touch (running IOS 4) is $19.99 and FileMaker Go for

Great, that could be very handy ... when I get a version of FileMaker newer
than 5.5. Surprised)

The pricing is a bit iffy though. Why does the iPad version cost more?? It
just needs to be the exact same app but allow a bigger "window" size. ?Surprised(

You pay per pixel. And don't forget Apple is undergoing some financial
difficulties at this time. Those greedy kids in the China
jumped of the factory roofs for most selfish reasons, putting Apples
profits down to USD 3bn in the second quarter.

Even that "explanation" doesn't work since the iPhone 4 version needs more
"pixels" than the iPhone 3G / Gs version. ;o)

Why this whining about some few $ or € ? The real filemaker application
cost alot more, and I am really happy with the great functionality on
the iPhone and my iPad. And it is much better functionality on the
iPad, especially with a keyboard dock or bluetooth keyboard, than on
the small iphone screen. I think it is worth every $ for me and my
business.
If you still are on filemaker 5.5... well then it is time to start the
rebuild of your solution, and then you will get back the nice feeling
you had when filemaker 3 came Smile

Nobody's whining. I originally simply questioned why the iPad version
would cost more than an iPhone version. Maybe it has more features, maybe
it replicates the layouts better due to the bigger screen size, etc. I
don't know, I haven't read all the details yet, but if it's pure greed,
then it's a silly Microsoft-like decision by FileMaker Inc.

I've bought both the iPhone and iPad versions. They appear to be
functionally identical. The obvious difference is that the iPad version
can show more at a readable resolution due to its larger display, so you
are mostly paying for seeing more at full resolution.

The iPhone version will run on the iPad (I had both on my iPad until I
realised and deleted the iPhone version), but limited to the usual small
iPhone screen size, or pixel doubled to nearly fill the iPad screen.

Don't know what the iPhone version will do on an iPhone 4. I doubt it
would show the layout at higher resolution, and the user interface
elements will be the same actual size (twice as many pixels in each
dimension).

The iPad version's user interface elements are slightly better. For
example:

- The bar along the bottom has a popup menu to select a layout. The iPad
version shows the current layout name alongside the icon, while the
iPhone version just has the icon, and you need to tap it to see the
selected layout name in the menu.

- The iPad version's record navigation tool has a slider control and
shows the current record number and total record count, while the iPhone
version has arrows to step one record, and a circle in the middle you
can tap to pop-up a slider and current record number and count.

For comparison, Bento is also available in both iPad and iPhone
versions, but they are the same price. The iPhone version is very plain
- really just a textual data entry and browsing tool, with no layout
control. (Pictures can be displayed on a sub-screen.) The iPad version
has nicer graphics and is more usable overall but has similar
functionality. Both of them can be used to create a database or modify
the structure of an existing database on the iPhone/iPad (unlike
FileMaker Go).

For those who don't have a hosted database (on FileMaker Pro or Server),
Bento for iPhone/iPad has the advantage that it can sync changes with
Bento on the Mac (limited to a single iPhone and a single iPad) over a
WiFi network, whereas with FileMaker Go you have to copy the database
back and forth by hand.

FileMaker Go makes a lot of sense in a multi-user situation with a
hosted database. I'm not sure how the licensing is handled, especially
given that an application purchased under a single iTunes account can be
used on an unlimited number of iOS devices which are managed by the same
computer, and up to five computers could share the same iTunes account.

That might account for the relatively high pricing for FileMaker Go (but
still doesn't explain the iPad version being 2.5 times the cost of the
iPhone version).

That would depend on how iOS and/or individual applications handle the
problems of different resolution devices - some things may work, others may
not. For example, if you're using graphical buttons then they might stay the
same size on the higher resolution iPhone 4 screen or they might shrink.

Which just makes FileMaker Go's pricing even stranger. Surprised(

I still haven't had time to read the FileMaker Go details (so thanks for
your brief summary), but I thought the press release said it did have the
ability to access hosted databases, or does that only work via a 3G
connection?

You can log into a hosted database on filemaker server 10 or 11 over
wifi and 3G.
But, you can also copy the database via iTunes, and you can also log
into the database over a dropbox folder.
