Post subject: DSO Application with Analysis Services 2005
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>sqlserver>olap (more info?)

I have an application that uses DSO to define and populate cubes which works
on the AS2000 platform. I am trying to evaluate how easily this can be
ported to SQL 2005 platform.

I have installed SQL 2005 on a server and running a test app to connect
using DSO I get "The connection string to the repository needs to be
specified in the 9.0 server properties (see <DSO>...<\DSO section in
msmdsrv.ini file from Analysis Service 9.0)". I've found the file but I do
not know what to enter here. Can somebody assist?

Secondly, I would like to set up a client-server environment to test the
application in a more realistic configuration but I cannot figure out how to
set up the Analysis Services client-side components. The SQL Server 2005 CTP
setup does not seem to offer the this option. Any help here would be greatly
appreciated.

Many thanks,
Gary

Peter,
What I have found is that by running the SQL Server 2005 Management
programme and connecting to an instance of Analysis Services you can look at
its Properties, which are read from msmdsrv.ini, and it allows you to specify
connection details of a database to use as the DSO repository. You will then
be able to connect using DSO.

However, so far I have only been able to do this by running the application
on the server machine itself. I haven't been able to find a client install
that will put DSO on a client machine. I haven't yet had a look at the
September CTP. If you find such a thing I would be grateful if you could
pass it on.

HTH,
Gary

Hi, Gary

can you go on use DSO to retrieve AS objects like cubes, dimensions..
after connected the server with changing the settings like you said? We
failed seems DSO needed to query data from Repository.

I did find the property settings in analysis services.
however, once connected, i also cannot retrieve objects.
I believe my DBA as me using the last CTP.

Error:
Invalid object name 'OlapObjects'.
At:
Dim oDatabases As DSO.OlapCollection
Set oDatabases = DSOServer.MDStores

Previously, this is what I did to be able to connect using DSO:
1.) right click on instance of AS 2005 in mgmt studio and choose
properties
2.) check on the advanced (bottom left)
3.) scroll to DSO settings
4.) specify the 3rd and 4th settings – connection strings
5.) restart the instance

The above is where I left it - all I know - figured i would wait for Nov 7th.
But if there are any ideas, I would certainly try them.
thanks,
Peter.
